KSEA begins its season with a week of free sailing instruction. This is made possible by generous donations from KYC members and others to the Rusty Duym Memorial Scholarship, which honors an inspirational member of our community who was a passionate and skilled sailor. This course is free of charge and open to sailors of all ages and skill levels. Participants are encouraged to make a donation to the scholarship if they have the means to do so.
The classes will teach introductory seamanship, water safety, boat rigging and basic boat handling. Children in grades 3-8 will sail Optimist dinghies; high school and adult sailors will sail 420s.
Participants must be able to swim and must bring a properly fitting life jacket with a whistle. Early in the week there will be a capsize drill, so bring a bathing suit, towel, and change of clothes. Sailors should wear closed shoes, such as sneakers. Dress appropriately for the weather. Classes will take place no matter what the weather; in case of fog or calm there will be on shore activities. Whistles may be purchased at KYC.
