OPTIMIST RACE COACH

The Opti Race Coach is responsible for the leadership & coaching the growing Opti race team.   This will involve daily instruction as well as on-the-water coaching at local & travel regattas. The race team is small but dedicated, and we expect the race coach to foster a positive team environment where racers feel both challenged and supported by their teammates and coach.

In addition, he/she will:

  • Develop a summer-long racing syllabus
  • Plan and execute daily lesson plans to refine sailors’ knowledge of boat handling, boat speed, tactics & strategy as well as racing rules
  • Assist with Opti fleet maintenance throughout the summer
  • Help organize and supervise travel to and from local and regional regattas
  • Provide on-the-water coaching at regattas
  • Partner with local programs for team racing practice
  • Provide KSEA Program Director with timely information about calendar events, including NOR, registration information, etc.
  • With Senior Race Coach, assist with hosting and running regattas hosted by KSEA

The Opti Coach must be US Sailing Level 3 certified by the first day of the sailing season. KSEA will assist with the cost of certification. CPR and First Aid certification also required. Minimum two seasons of coaching experience preferred.

Program Director

The KSEA Program Director will work closely with the KSEA Board, the Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club (KYC) Manager and KSEA’s team of instructors to fulfill on the KSEA mission to encourage both children and adults to develop a love of sailing and responsibility for stewardship of the marine environment.  He/She will be required to oversee all aspects of the sailing program, including class scheduling, staff management and communication.  In this capacity, he/she will act as liaison with KSEA staff, KSEA Board, program participants and parents.

The ideal candidate has a strong sailing background with previous experience managing teams.  He/she is organized, self-motivated, flexible, professional and able to balance a variety of responsibilities.

The position is full-time seasonal position from June 1 – August 31, 2017.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with KYC Manager in overseeing day-to-day scheduling & performance of KSEA staff
  • Assist KSEA registrar in updating registration system with current program information; track enrollment
  • Represent the KSEA sailing program at KSEA and KYC board meetings
  • Act as KSEA representative with select sailing associations and symposiums
  • Work closely with Volunteer Committee Co-Chairs to facilitate parent participation
  • Oversee the KSEA program calendar, including special events, awards and regattas
  • Act as lead in an emergency response plan; regularly update master list of all emergency contact information and response procedures
  • Prepare & post regular KSEA newsletters throughout the summer
  • Post reminders of upcoming events, class registrations, etc.
  • Respond daily to KSEA-related voicemails and emails
  • Be available to answer questions from parents, students, staff and KSEA Board
  • Ensure that the KSEA facility is clean and safe; be a watchful presence during the sailing school season

Qualifications

  • Excellent organizational and program management skills
  • Strong communication skills; exhibits a professional and approachable demeanor
  • Ability to multi-task; comfortable managing multiple projects/responsibilities simultaneously
  • Previous experience with team management
  • Strong sailing background; competent driving a powerboat
  • Proficiency in basic computer and internet skills
